White meets Minister Dempsey over constituency roads funding

Thursday, 04 February 2010

Green Party T.D. for Carlow/Kilkenny, Mary White, has met Transport Minister, Noel Dempsey, to discuss the upcoming allocations for roads for Carlow and Kilkenny.

Speaking after her meeting with Minister Dempsey in Leinster House this morning the Green Party Deputy Leader said:
“This morning I had a productive meeting with the Minister for Transport, who has responsibility for giving funding to local authorities for roads’ maintenance and repair. I conveyed quite clearly to him the damage that has been done to some of the constituency roads due to the recent cold snap. Some of the Class 2 roads are in a desperate state, whilst others will become impassable if repairs are not done soon. The Minister took note of this, and has assured me that both counties will be appropriately funded when allocations are given in a few weeks time. He said funds were limited but he will allocate those funds in as fair a way as possible.

Deputy White concluded:
“The Minister is also pursuing emergency funding from the EU, and this avenue is being actively pursued. The Minister is giving local authorities maximum discretion on how they spend this year’s allocation.”
