White welcomes renewal of Fairtrade status for Carlow Town

Carlow, 19 February 2010

Green Party T.D. for Carlow/Kilkenny, Mary White, has welcomed the news that the fairtrade status of Carlow town is to be renewed.

Speaking ahead of Fairtrade fortnight, which runs from February 22nd to March 7th, the Green Party Deputy Leader said: “I’m delighted with the news that Carlow Town’s status as a fairtrade town is to be renewed. The fair trade movement is about promoting the production of goods in a socially just and sustainable way, and it is a very proud achievement for the town to have attained the status. It shows a town’s aspirations for a fairer economic way. To get such status many people had to contribute: volunteers, community groups, the Council, local retailers and local media. All involved deserve immense credit for their efforts.

Deputy White added: “The next fortnight provides a great opportunity for the town to promote the benefits of fair-trade products and the movement towards a global economy based on fair-trade not free trade, and the production of goods of high social and environmental standards. I wish all involved with events in the coming fortnight, such as the talk in St. Leo’s school next Tuesday, well with their efforts.”
